Installation guide – best practices
Engineered Wood Flooring
First, we’re here to help.
Whether you plan to install the flooring yourself or work with your own contractor, we are always happy to help. We offer installation consultations and can also recommend installation teams we have personally worked with and trust on real projects. If you’d like a list or want to talk through your specific situation, just reach out.
The installation process plays a critical role in the beauty, performance, and longevity of a wood floor. We are just as invested as you are in seeing it installed thoughtfully and correctly—so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Before Installation
Prepare the space
- Installation should take place once major construction work is complete and the space is ready for final finishes.
- The area should be enclosed and protected from direct exposure to weather.
- Normal indoor living conditions should be established.
Acclimatize the wood (very important)
- Flooring should be stored inside the installation space for approximately five (5) days before installation.
- Keep boards in their original packaging and stacked flat.
- This allows the wood to naturally adjust to the temperature and humidity of the home.
Taking time at this stage greatly improves the final result.
Installation Surfaces (General Guidance)
Engineered wood flooring can be installed over a variety of surfaces, depending on site conditions and installer preference. Common surfaces include:
- Concrete
- Existing tile or ceramic
- Existing wood flooring
- Other properly prepared surfaces
In all cases:
- The surface should be clean, dry, stable, and level
- Loose materials, uneven areas, or surface residues should be addressed beforehand
- Moisture conditions should be appropriate for wood flooring
Your installer will evaluate the surface and recommend the best preparation and installation approach.
Installation Methods
We recommend glue-down installation for Konoha engineered wood flooring, which offers the best longevity.
Layout and Pattern
Plan before you begin
- Laying out a few rows before starting helps visualize the final look.
- Planning ahead allows for better balance of color, grain, and board length.
Juntas Perdidas (random stagger)
- Staggering board joints creates a natural, timeless appearance.
- Avoid repeating patterns or visible alignment from row to row.
Tips for a Natural, Balanced Floor
Mix boards thoughtfully
It’s human nature—often unconsciously—to install the longest or largest boards first to feel quick progress. While understandable, this can lead to visual repetition.
We recommend opening multiple boxes at the same time and mixing boards throughout the installation. Our flooring is intentionally packed with boards from different pieces of wood to create a natural, harmonious result when properly blended.
Balance grain, color, and length
As you install, pay attention to:
- Grain patterns
- Color tones
- Board lengths
A little intention here makes a big difference in the final appearance.
Start with the Most Important Space
For the best visual impact, consider starting in the main living space, such as the living room or primary social area. Selecting boards intentionally for this space ensures the most beautiful pieces are showcased where they will be enjoyed the most.
After Installation
- Allow the floor to settle according to installer recommendations before heavy use.
- Maintain comfortable indoor temperature and humidity levels.
- Use felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy objects.
- Clean using products suitable for wood flooring.
A Final Note
Engineered wood flooring is a natural material designed to bring warmth, character, and longevity into a space. A thoughtful installation—especially at the beginning—goes a long way toward achieving a beautiful result that lasts for generations.
